Create a separate page linked to your Portfolio page and write a short summary of Feminist theatre, some details of which are found in your course packet (pages 21 and 22). At the end of your summary, argue for or against the designation of Trifles as a Feminist play.
Feminist theatre had started in the early 70's after the Civil Rights Movement. For the most part, it focused on the more radical side of feminism in response to the misogyny demonstrated by the Left. The alternative theatre gave way for some women playwrights to express their works and art, such as Megan Terry. Many feminists theaters formed and produced plays that challenged the systemic patriarchy. Liberal feminism began playing a part in the theater in the 80's. Many women playwrights received awards for their work. Some theaters touched on sexuality with the rising pride movements during the time. Because of increasing economic strain, the feminist theaters struggled to sustain itself. The theater eventually declined towards the end of the 80s.
I believe Trifles is a feminist play because in the end, the women were the ones who controlled the plot of the play and formed the ending. They controlled the fate of the other characters in the play. In the end, the women were the characters that had the most power.
